This movie is carefully crafted with great attention to detail (the various contemporary objects seen in the closing titles are symbolic of this). I have watched it several times including twice dubbed into Spanish, by which it did not lose much, and I will want to see it again. There is a great and admirable friendship between sheriff and deputy, which even resists the wiles of a scheming female. And a convincingly really loathsome, though elegant and suave villain -funny how the Yanks like to use Englishmen for such repugnant rôles - must hark back to the War of Independence. The plot is a traditional one but its treatment refreshingly different. If you find it slow at times, what do you expect from a dusty little town in the middle of nowhere? The general tranquility makes the sporadic, intense action even more sforzando when it does flare up. (9/10)
If you're a western freak like me, you'll need to buy or rent this, so as to encourage more. I'd tie myself to the horse if it helps. Reckon I'll just watch again, along with forgiven, tombstone, open range, yuma and old spaghetti westerns until another worth it's spit comes along, and if not, I'll die with my boots on.
It amazes me to hear people call this movie boring. Boring?? I always hear people say "too much talking" when speaking of movies. Is that is a bad thing? I guess some of us like to see a little character development,interaction and human emotion instead of just nonstop gunfire and geeks using too much CGI. I think most directors today rely heavily on CGI and nonstop gunfire and explosions because they lack creativity and the ability to produce a good storyline. Anyway,for those who like to see characters that you care about,splendid direction,excellent acting,beautiful cinematography and set design..this film is for you. A must see by all means. Ed Harris does a wonderful job both behind,and in front of,the camera. This film should be considered for several awards. A story of friendship,love,revenge and life in general. One of the best westerns to come along since the glory days of the spaghetti films during the 60's and 70's. Anyone who claims this is a boring picture..well,we wont go there. Peace fellas.
the scenes, costums, locations, acting.. everything really made you feel as if you were there. and version ---was like DVD quality. was really enjoyable.. seen it 3 times now and intend to watch several more.
I thought it was a good movie. mabey not great as westerns go but very good I like the actors. Ed harris did a great job directing.

I liked the movie and the cast. The only problem I had with it was a weak ending. I suppose the idea that good always triumphs over evil was the message portrayed at the end. I would lable this a movie about friendship. I really lost faith in the character RZ played. I guess it goes without saying that a dishonest woman can wreck the best of friendships and alliances between men. RZs character had the two law men almost at odds with each other. I know women in real life like her. I'm not picking on women because there are dishonest men in life too. RZs character just brought this issue to light better though. I would give it a 7.5 on a scale of 10.
i would save this for a random movie night, nothing special, i fell asleep on my bed wathcing this, then again i had just ate food, and well i guess i got lazy, ed harris does his work though, 3/5
You know you really can't ask more from a movie. The acting was good, the plot was ripe and the story moved along smoothly. It's not a western like Tombstone but you get the same vibe from it. Two guys just trying to do whats right. I gave the movie a 4/5 and i would say to anyone who likes westerns to give this movie a watch, it's well worth it.
A marshal and his deputy try to apprehend a murderer. The movie also contains romance. Ed Harris, as in other roles he's played, deserves praise for his acting.
This is a decent western; nothing special. The action moves too slowly at times. They could have trimmed off 20 minutes by moving the plot along less slowly. Sometimes you think you may fall asleep waiting for a character to talk.
For me "Appaloosa" rates 6 out of 10.
