In the Robert Towne-directed adaptation of John Fante's Depression Era novel, Hayek will play the fiery Mexican beauty Camilla who hopes to rise above her station by marrying a wealthy American. That is complicated by meeting Arturo Bandini (Farrell), a first-generation Italian hoping to land a writing career and a blue-eyed blonde on his arm.
I thought this was a fabulous film! I'm an avid movie-goer, and I'm disappointed that this film went by unnoticed by me. Saw it accidentally on TV, halfway through I realized I was sitting there clinging on to my pillow crying. Fantastic film.

I loved their fightey relationship, and I did NOT see the ending coming. It's like.. oh, all's great, in a tear-inducing, moving way, happy end .. and then *THUD*. ;( but the story is great, and just.. really really good. Though I didnt get the point of the burnt ass lady, she didnt seem to fit in, but meh, she didnt do any harm either so..
lovely. 9.9/10 (minus point one for making me cry like that!!)
kind of recalls the film noire of the late 40´s. I thought the acting, plot and the whole movie recalled those times very well. Recommend you watch it, but the ending is sad
SO BORING, i don't even know how i manage to watch the hole movie,it's not even sad and i am a sap for sad movie thats how bad this movie. don't waste your time on watching it 3/10
I loved this movie, Salma was amazing as always and i specially loved Colin ( you actually get a glimps of his ass). Overall it was a good movie and they both played their role well. I can see what poeple mean about Colin not being fitted for his role, cause we are so used to seeing him play the tougher guy and in this movie he was more the softer kind of guy and i think that was one of the reasons why i enjoyed this movie because it shows that Colin as an actor he is versatile, he was believable in his role and made me want to watch till the end. What else could you ask for.4/5
I'm not sure I liked this movie. Truthfully, it moved really slow, and I really couldn't say what this movie was truly about. Colin was not the right person for his role, but I managed to watch it to the end, and I liked the ending.
I liked this movie a lot. It kind of defines what it's like to be in an interracial relationship. If you haven't been in one, you can't feel the emotions of the characters =))
It was OK but I was disappointed because it could have been so much more.
Salma Hayek was great. Colin Farrell was OK but immature for the role, and too much eyebrow not enough holding it up. Let's see some leading men, save the leading boys for the bubblegum movies.
People in charge of set or scenery either didn't think this was an important movie or else were working with limited means, somehow Los Angeles in this movie has become a town of 300 people out of whom only 30 actually work, the rest wander the street (in this movie LA seems to be a village with one main road). The scenes in the tavern where Camilla works are claustrophobic, lighting was wrong, camera angles were repetitive. The relationship with Vera was like a small burp in the middle of the meal, when she was such a complex character and obviously there was much more storyline there to explore, but they wanted a short movie and a cut budget. Everything about this movie showed that the people making it seemed to be in a huge hurry to get it finished and really didn't give a damn that they were turning gold back into lead.
Salma Hayek saves this movie from being a catastrophe. Beyond being easy on the eyes, she takes her abbreviated character and shines in some really strong scenes..but again, we see she is portraying a complex character we only get to see a small piece of, both script and characters seem cropped and chopped to fit. I've seen movies made for TV that had more attention to details like character development, scenery and set design.
I bother to write all this because I think this could have been a really great movie, maybe even a classic..but the accountants were the ones directing this movie. Makes me angry.
The movie downloaded for me fine, video was a little choppy and sound was a couple tics behind but not a big deal. I love this site.
