First..His kids needed to be taught some manners and respect as it was clear their Mother did not do her job right raising them..It was NOT Jake's fault they went with the Mother for those 10 years he did not see them..Jake clearly had the right values and was a man of true grit..You only have to see his boys have become real good men at the end of the movie, under Jake's actions and his example..
A major western that I much enjoy, but the spectacle of a father punching his sons in the jaw immediately after a ten years' absence I personally find rather distasteful However, Wayne seemed to think that such bad behaviour was always expected of him. There's a proper place for brawls whether comic or serious. Once more the golden axiom recited by Eli Wallach in The Good The Bad & The Ugly, "If you're gonna shoot, shoot; if you`re gonna talk, talk!" was ignored, much to the cost of the talker and would-be shooter. I liked the way the newfangled gadgetry of the early 1900s was incorporated in the plot, and the demonstration that a hay-burner was still superior to a motor-car in the Wild West, though the incredible acrobatics with the M/C were quite impressive. Compared to the much superior "The Searchers", that also had an abduction :7½/10.
