Very good, I like scifi movies that make the best of the technology available when they are made. The book was better but I dont think it is possible for a movie to surpass a well written book.
Most people don't know this, but the book was better than any of the dune movies, and I've seen them all. Still, if reading isn't your thing, then I definitely recommend this version as opposed to the newer ones. It kept to the spirit of the original story better. That's the best way to describe it. It's also one of the first time's I've seen Patrick Stewart out of his usual role discussing the future of the human race with demigod aliens. Hehehe.
The movie could never be the book ( books are ALWAYS better) but this movie captured the essence of the film and thus is exceptional. I watched it years ago and I am watching it again today and I am just as excited and thrilled about it. EXCELLENT movie.
I would normally agree, but I actually think the Lord of the Rings trilogy movies are better than the books. It is probably because the books are so old and I don't like that "old style" of writing that is harder to understand and is real slow reading.
I really enjoyed Dune; the story line was pretty deep. It's the kind of movie I could watch 2 or 3 times and understand it more each time. It's basically about a boy who had a destiny and what he went through to make it happen, and how a boy became a leader. I never read the books even though I have seen them around but if the book is better than the movie I will definitely take a look at them because I really enjoyed the movie it was one of my favorites. To me for some reason it’s like a star wars/escape from New York time of movie, that’s just me.
This movie is like Blade Runner it was truly ahead of it time. of course I am refering to one that had Sting as a villian in it.
It is very lengthy movie, but I feel it was well written.
When consider this movie was made "before" a time that cgi technology was invented, yet these guys really "pull all the stops" to create a surreal off-world experience.
That what makes this movie incredtible --

The worms on spice-world seemed real, or consider the breathing suit and character costumes, you got the the will-ding weapon. Also, the voice modulator thing!
and the elaborate staging of of off-worlds artistry and ships of outerspace.
I alway got the feeling I was there with them.
What about the musical score -- love interest ballet..
I like this movie a lot but its way to short, there's way more in the book to help you understand and this is just one book in a long series. The Duniverse should get the same movie treatment as star wars and have 9 or so movies.Since different parts of dune at set apart at different times yu might be able to film more the one at the same time. like the robot revolt, and paul's story, the twins' story, and the House stories.The Duniverse has the potential for a large franchise. One book could span 12 1 hour episodes if done right with modern technology and advancements in cgi, think Pan's Labyrinth level dune!
Still The Best Movie Of Mankind Fulfilling His Full Potential!
I don't like this cut they took out so much the extended version is far better, but it is still my favorite movie, and the best books series of all times!
Loved this movie..worth watching. You just have to make sure you pay attention from the start otherwise you might get a little lost. Great sci-fi movie.
ok i have never seen this version before, ive seen a european David lynch directors cut 3 hours long of the film not the "Alan Smithee* version" without the prologue after seeing this version i assume it was the american rental version this is a good movie inspired alot of scifi but lost so much money it broke the studio making it. and love it but didnt like this version wish i watched the old vhs copy now.
*for those who dont know when a film is directed by Alan smithee it the version the director wanted nothing to do with and the studio forced the realease
Yes yes yes yes yes. I enjoyed the original Dune and always will. Star Trek Captn Picard looks great too ;-) as well as Kyle. Well, the movie has a storyline that is incredible - a sci fi classic.
I saw this when it first came out, was a treat for me then as much as it was today. Thanks for having such original classic retro and purely entertaining movies available. 5/5 stars
Back in the day this was a stunning film with plenty of odd characters and weird surreal landscapes.
It may not stand up to todays computer graphic special effects but if you can just let it slide when you see a superimposed toy spaceship on strings I think you will enjoy it.
I loved this movie as a kid so I am gonna give it 10/10 but I will let you make your own mind up.

I have no real clear answer as to why I like this movie so much. I first saw it in 1986, when I was about 10, and it had such an impact on me that I have watched it at least 15-20 times since. It simply is my favourite sci-fi movie of all time, which is some claim as this genre is so rich in quality. An excellent adaptation of the book.
The mood, style, and look of this fantasy world is pure genius that immediatley grabs your attention(love the opening voice over) and allows your imagination to run wild. It doesn't follow the typical laser beams, black holes and lightspeed themes of others sci-fi movies. It is totally original in look ,content and style and I had not seen or have seen since anything like it. It just makes me feel excited when i watch it, basically it's COOL 9.5/10 A MUST SEE IF YOU LIKE SCI - FI

I wasn't even born when this show came out and i've seen it like fifty times. I saw the remarks but it just doesn't feel the same. I missed the part where he .... and the ground ... (sorry no spoilers). The remark is good but i keep coming back to this one.

And to judge, this movie kicked butt when I was young. Still awesome. Now I just gotta find "Children of Dune" I haven't seen that one yet.
Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel "Dune" is a masterful epic, blending a variety of social, political, and economic issues into a gripping and thought provoking tale of messianic ascension. Herbert's story was more than just a bunch of rebels running around on sand dunes, chasing giant worms and fighting evil dictators. It was class struggle, corruption, inner growth. Sadly, when someone finally got around to turning his work into a movie, all of that was forgotten amidst swirling desert winds, constructed on a long ago disassembled Hollywood soundstage.
This film blew me away when it was originally released, what a really cool story! The CGI is pretty weak(the space scenes - but this was made decades ago) and the rest of the film more than compensates in comparison to today's standards. Compared with similar pictures - this film is much, much better on every level. Great acting and interesting story - will keep even the most action- hungry viewer satisfied!! Enjoy!! 4.75/5
flash gordon esque at the end but yes a good all rounder took a couple of views to understand what they were talkin about re: the mighty being aka quizaksadarak(?) dunno how to spell it but you get my drift lol
This is one of the great SF movies ever just as good than Star Wars.
And all the great actors are also in it.
Go watch it now its realy good.
