Apartment building superintendent Cleveland Heep (Giamatti) rescues what he thinks is a young woman from the pool he maintains. When he discovers that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the journey back to her home, he works with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world.
I think one of the reasons people are often critical of this movie is the way it was marketed. The trailers made it seem scary, intense, possibly horror-oriented.
If you want to be scared, this is not the movie for you. This is not an action flick, it doesn't have some crazy psyco killer, the graphics did not cost more than a theme park, you wont feel nauseated due to the camera shaking ruthlessly, and the movie doesn't move so fast that you are forced to ask the guy next to you what it was about afterward. If you are looking for those things, this is not the movie for you, despite how it was marketed.
This movie is about the characters, the plot, the story, and believing that some bedtime stories are real. I watched this movie the first time having no idea what i was getting into, not having seen any trailers or advertisements, save the back of the dvd case, and loved it right away.
Not the best M. Night movie but still interesting. Giammati is very good as usual. and the movie is drected with skill and expertise, but the plot was just okay. Not a bad movie but we have grown to expect more from M.Night

but, when christmas shows up all the fairy tales become existent, your eyes are opened? back then, they did what they could with crayons. now, they dont even try to bring the beauty of childlike happiness without repeating mindless remakes with quick and glossy graphics. you are being played and not even noticing, good job hollywood! here, he does what little there is of such an attempt by general studios for a genuine innocence with still an intrigue that does not deter enough to make excuses. still you make them. there are graphics as well but for only seconds, the characters are the main focus and thats how it should be.
the dialogue is great and the actors all of them were an amazing combination.
i am happy this movie exists.
Just because your an adult doesn't mean your childhood innocence and imagination have to leave the building. Its not just a bedtime story, the welcoming and kindness to a stranger, its about people. Very original and should be appreciated for what it is, not mindless entertainment.. 4/5 stars.

Slow moving fairytale but great acting and good characters. It does not have an idiotic plot line like the happening, "watch out for the wind" but it does have a slow, methodic pace and the ending could have been fleshed out more considering it took so long to get to that point.
I was watching it and was waiting for something to happen it was so boring. I had to force myself to watch it to the end and then I thought that was it.

i didnt think that this was one of N. best movies but the acting wasnt that bad but after that it just got kind of awkward..i thought that the story line was not that bad actually

You really need to fix youku.com or delete them totally. Not one of their films have ever come in for me. I know it is free but if you do not get to view the whole film in it's entirety it is really not worth it if it is free or not. Otherwise great movie if you have four hours to spend watching a hour and a half film.
The reviews I'm seeing are pointing this film out and throwing it in the trash bin because of their expectations with Shyamalan, and his reputation. The thing is, it's not to be some horror with twists at every end. It's bound to make you think, surely, but it's based on a bed time tale he told his children. You have to learn to just sit back and enjoy the magic of it, and if you pay attention to it, it is a remarkable film. At some parts it does sort of linger, but other than that it is very advancing, and it is a modern fairytale people of practically all ages should enjoy. You just have to look at the beauty of the work itself, and not the one who made it. I also think that yes, Shyamalan could have lessened his role in the movie a bit more - but hey, let him live up to his vanity if need be. All in all a very good watch if you have the mind for it. 4/5

How the heck does this movie have a low rating and so many bad reviews? One of the few M. Night movies I enjoyed. The story was completely unique, the acting was amazing and there was a nice mix of many genres. Fantasy, drama and even comedy. Only a 7.5 while a movie like Seven Pounds (BORING!) has 9.0 --I don't get it. Love this movie, 8/10
This film is terrible. As I said, I admired Shyamalans work in The Village and thought every each of his work should be that good, but his new films keep getting worse and worse. He's a decent director, but screenwriting is absolutely bad. The plot is a little bit better than The Happening, but everything else is even worse; it looks like Shyamalan will never get free of his lame, infantile definition of "mystic", "horror" and "sad". This movie is self-centered and without any goal, it is funny in places where humor wasn't even intended, it is mystic where it was meant to be the least mystic and it is stupid where it was meant to be very serious.
This movie is a failure. Acting is bad, bad, bad, except for Giamatti, who's always top-notch.
If this self-centered indian dude is going to continue like this, he'll be thrown into the lowest of the lowest film making category forever. If he thinks that making multi-million budget movies with his infantile sense of things is gonna be success, he's seriously wrong.
This movie was very badly done, it's backstory and acting was decent. Although it's main plot and everything was very corny. I stopped watching in the very early stages of the film so as to not waste 110 minutes of my life of course ;)
I do not reccomend this movie and no wonder this movie won the award of, "Rsapberry's Worst Movie of the Year"
Shyamalan doesn't do a very good job of directing movies, so what would the Avatar Luve Action Movie be like?! Goodness, i hope he doesn't ruin Avatar as well. :(
Wow if anything I am now dumber for having watched this movie. I am done expecting good things from Shyamalan, ever since SIGNS he hasnt made one worth my time. This movie basically stole 110 mins of my life I will never get back. THANX ALOT!

I did not like The Village (sorry to all the Village fans) and I was not going to watch this movie. But today at work we were talking about and I deceided to give it a try. So glad I did this is a wonderful movie. Please give it a try. You will be amazed!! 5/5
