A great example of mind over matter and the belief that nothing is impossible..
[SPOILER]
im sure he thought he wud make it and 30 km out is just plain unlucky. He's done his family proud regardless of the outcome. His kid will grow up proud of his father.
He chased his dream.. Andrew McAuley knew the risks and rewards of attempting his mission.. It was his personal goal or dream and when you perish while chasing your dream then you perish a hero.. 4/5..
Wow! Amazing, All the respect to andrew and family. And wanted to add that the people that made imature comments are ignorant and just don't know when to stop judging and judging someones dreams. Andrew may god bless you and your wife and specially your son. 5/5
It really is a shame, but in my opinion he made it. Regardless of what happened I think his wife is great for supporting him and letting him do what he felt he needed to do. She's one in a billion and I hope she feels no guilt. God bless him and his family.
This is a very interesting documentary.I will give it that..but the only person I feel sorry for is his son.I can't feel sorry for someone who made the decision he made..shameful!!
A tragic end not only for AndrewMc but for his family and friends.. I feel sadness for his little boy and wonder whether Andrew was somewhat selfish in his quest for adventure.
The link that I watched was a boring Australian movie, about some old guy wanting to run away for the mob - how has that got anything to do with sailing across an ocean?
now that was good.. im still sniffleing and im a guy. ive, climbed moutains, and have walked the appalacian trail, then walked the PCT but had to turn back, or stop. i knew my limitations. this guy didnt know his limitations, but he was about 25 miles off.. now thats sad because he almost did it. he missed it by that much, (GET SMART) its not aspoiler because it starts with his death call. very moving, best documentary ive seen ever. the guy that went into the wild shouldve watched this..
Well At Least He Did What He Set Out To Do In Life.
His wife knew he was a adventure junkie when they met, hell she is one herself. So they both knew that one day they might lose their life doing what gave the most happiness in life. To each his or her own, but I say he is happy. And that is what life is about doing the things in life that makes you happy, not doing things that you must do, b/c that would make one miserable. When you are not happy you don't perform well in any situation/job.
That man loved his life so there! If you are happy then there is nothing to prove, or explain. Your life is speaking for itself. And his life spoke clearly!
No false bravado here.
Just another thrill seeking junkie looking for the ultimate fix.
I felt sorry for the wife, child, family and friends that had to watch him basically play Russian roulette with his life.
Sure we can all die any time, any moment and life should be lived to its fullest..
...But some people just have to stack the odds against them I guess.
possibly you should just go outside
it is a great world in which the spirit of mankind pushes the limits regardless of what the end may be.
if it were not for people like him we would not have made it to America nor any other places.
stay inside and whine
Doing something dangerous because may come of it is one thing. Doing it just to hold a record or do it before anyone else serves no real purpose. Don't kid yourself. It's all about the thrill or the bragging rights. It shouldn't be about orphaning your child and widowing your spouse. This guy was a great example of a bad husband and father.
Regardless of what his wife may think, he didn't.
Reaching the summit of a mountain doesn't mean jack if you don't make it back down to the base camp.
Summiting is optional, making it back to camp is not.
this guy was an idiot. he left his wife, children and a good job to go into a well known dangerous area of the ocean in a friggin kayake knowing he could die..moron.
wayneallyn, as someone who has engaged numerous extreme sports as a young woman, I don't know where to begin telling you how wrong you are. All that engaging these dangerous acts gave me was an over inflated sense of self accomplishment, and all that I gave society was another name to put on a record, that, in reality, only a select group of people actually care about, for a short amount of time until someone else came along with better gear. Yes, you can dive the Blue Hole at Dahab on one tank, but when you suffer narcosis and see the bodies down there of other one tank wonders, you realize why trimix is the better choice. Obviously a proper sea craft is the better choice for crossing oceans.
I've accomplished and contributed more to the world in my life as a mother than I have in any expedition that I've taken part in or any record that I've held. Anyone who can't find the absolute end all and be all of their existence in the humble adventure of procreation, and furthermore, feels the need to jeopardize that gift chasing after the fleeting glory that setting extreme sports records offers, is a person who has so little respect for life that their death wish is karmic in it's guarantee to come true.
Wow outstanding, i dont even know what to say, yes he isnt a hero, but he did prove himself to be the best at what he did. did i cry, yes because it is sad, he could see land and didnt make it he was so close but yet so far.
when people are saying that hes an idiot, dumbass and all, you are wrong, there is no reason to call him that, how is it stupid? he knew what he was going up against, he did it! none of you who are insulting him would never do anything to that extreme, infact you would never do anything close to anything extreme. insulting a man because you know you could never do something is wrong. think about that for a second.
hes a hero to his wife and son, friends and family, and to himself.
i am not going to rate this film because it deserves more then that.
i can respect people like Andrew that like to challenge and push themselves to do things that others mite think aren't humanly possible, but at what cost. now his family and friends have to go through life without him being there. some people do these extreme things to fill like they're alive but why risk it, when you have everything to live for. R.I.P. ANDREW
A powerful documentary and we all need to think about the dangerous risks we take while chasing fame and our dreams. I no-longer boat race due to facing death myself and soon afterward I lost a dear friend in a similar accident. When James died on the Savannah River, I got the message!
Thank you Andrew, you reminded me again, I needed that!
shame he did not make it but I believe he set off with the smallest of belief after his first failed attempt and then suprised himself, he unfortunately left behind others to suffer the real pain of his greed for fame, that is selfish
But without people like this pushing the boundaries of human achievement where would we be, So many successes are documented and only remembered. how you feel about this after watching it is a personal thing and I can't imagine anyone would agree on the whole but
[SPOILER]
what a waste of much needed emergency resources in circumstances like this, anyone who deliberately puts themself in danger should not expect to be bailed out by others
Was he an idiot? probably but then
[SPOILER]
had he suceeded would we have thought the same ? only his failure made him not be aclaimed as an hero to us
Whatever reason people decide to do this kind of activity it is not just they that have to live with the consequences which is the real shame.
Good watch 7/10
Well he is from now on my hero. Gonna search more about him! And you people, stop judging him. Offcourse he had a lot to loose. His friends, his beautifull wife ande son, but people do mistakes, everyone does, and lucky is the one who can learne from them. I´m very sorry the seas didn´t gave him the respect that he proved to deserve with his bravery! And you Andrew McAuley, will have a page in world brave men book.
As a kayaker and kayak builder I can understand the irrational desire to go farther and deeper and rougher each time you go out-it's happened to me. Luckily, I had a few close calls that I was lucky enough to survive and that made me realize just how foolish I had been-this is the only reason I'm still alive-I would have just kept pushing myself untill I didn't make it. But, having said that-THIS MAN WAS A FOOL. He had only made one 30 hour crossing before he decided to tackle the Tasmanian sea for 30 days. You'll note that he kept complaining about living in the cockpit as if he didn't know that's what he would have to do to make this crossing! I'll go so far as to bet he had never even slept in the boat before he left on a 30 day crossing. I'm sad for his wife and son. I'm sad for his friends and relatives. But most of all I'm sad that fools like this become the face of the sport instead of the millions of level headed and responsible people out there who practice safe boating and come home to their wives and kids and jobs and responsibilities everyday.
Sorry for the rant but as you can see this is a subject that is very close to my heart.
It's a well made documentary about a foolish man doing a very foolish thing.
