In late 1950's New York, Tom Ripley, a young underachiever, is sent to Europe to retrieve a rich and spoiled millionaire playboy, named Dickie Greenleaf. But when the errand fails, Ripley kills the playboy and begins to assume his life.
He didn't want to kill Peter, he had to as he had discovered Cate Blanchett's character was also on the ship and if the two of them met his web of lies would have come undone. He couldn't kill her as she had company so he had to kill Peter even though he saw him as a chance to finally be happy. It broke his heart.
Constantly entertaining and suspenseful, the entire film is completely unpredictable. Brilliantly written with equally brilliant acting. Matt Damon is always a pleasure to watch.
A smart, elegant film that will keep you watching till the end.

Every time you think Tom is caught, surprise! Wonderfully entertaining, you are as if a traveling fly who knows all from every angle, whilst others see only their side. Superb acting draws you into every character as only the fly can see them. 5/5
This is still my favorite Matt Damon movie - he played this guy so well! A character like this frightens me much more than all the stupid horror movies combined. 5/5
As we all are capable of pretending or projecting who we really are NOT, Mr Ripley profits from it. To be like another seems o be a byproduct of zelous Marketeers..
Worth a couple hours of your time..to watch this film.

I had not watched this movie for a few years and decided to visit the old acquaintance. What a good visit! I'd forgotten how good this movie is. The whole piece is tight, not one dangling spot or inconsistency. Well done as far as the whole thing goes. Should probably put it into my personal library.
one of my favourite films.. hadn't seen this for a long time.. this is what perfect thrillers are made of.. i just wish tom had decided to be with peter in the end.. instead of meredith.. poor peter..
people who haven't seen this are missing out on a lot of fun, intrigue and heart-stopping moments..
